What is the age bracket for jobs in the UN?

I got the following question the other day: “Do you know the age bracket for jobs in the UN?”

Here is my take: To my knowledge (and keep in mind I’m not the UN, nor do I speak on their behalf) the following applies:

  • You have to be an adult to work for the UN (the UN does not condone child labor)
  • Certain programmes like the Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Programme, or the UN’s Young Professional Programme (YPP) have age restrictions.
  • The retirement age for anyone hired on a staff contract today is currently 62 years. Which means that if you want to work beyond that age, you will need to get a waiver.

Other than these boundaries, to my knowledge, there are no age restrictions. Are you working in an HR capacity in a UN organisation? Do you know of any further age related regulations? Please let us know in the FORUM – thanks!

UNICEF: One week left to apply for the 5th NETI Cohort!

As mentioned earlier, UNICEF has recently launched the recruitment campaign for the 5th NETI Cohort. Applications will be accepted through e-recruitment and the deadline for all applications is August 15, 2012. Selected NETI participants are expected to start in January 2013.

The NETI Programme serves as an entry point for dynamic professionals interested in an international career with UNICEF. Qualified National Officers and General Service Staff at the GS-6 and GS-7 level are encouraged to apply.

For more information on the NETI Programme please visit the NETI website or review the different NETI jobs (make sure you use the Internet Explorer when you access the UNICEF e-recruitment system).

Watch out for fake UN Democracy Fund vacancies

Before we start, just a quick reminder: I’m NOT the UN and I’m NOT speaking on behalf of them. I make it a point of the UN Job List, NOT to actually host any job advertisement but to ALWAYS link back to the ORIGINAL vacancy announcement. I advise you to be very suspicious of any job advertisement that does not link back to a reputable and verifiable source.

So, please watch out for fake job advertisements when you apply for UN Jobs. I know that a lot of you want to be part of the UN System, but be suspicious and careful if you get advertisements if you can’t verify the source. Currently there seems to be a wave of fake UN Democracy Fund (UNDEF) vacancies. This is a warning I saw:

Fake vacancy announcements have been repeatedly circulated in the name of the UN Democracy Fund, UNDEF, via non-UN websites and email imitating UN email addresses. In some cases, correspondence falsely signed in the name of real UNDEF officials has ensued, asking would-be applicants to part with copies of personal documents and even money.

As part of the UN Secretariat, UNDEF posts job vacancies only at careers.un.org and, in the cases of temporary vacancy announcements, on the UN Secretariat intranet site iSeek. Please disregard any emails, or non-UN websites, purporting to announce UNDEF job vacancies, and pass on this warning to anyone you think may be affected.

Jobs at the International Criminal Court back on the UN Job List

Hello together,

I just wanted to let you know that the jobs of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague are back on the UN Job List. Please let me know if you know of other organisations that should be added to the List.

Also, I added the functionality of sorting to all tables on the UN Job List – to sort for any column, just click on the table heading. If you click once, the table will be sorted ascending, if you click a second time, the table will be sorted descending.

The UN’s Young professional programme (YPP) is open for applications now! Here is what the UN says:

The United Nations is looking for highly qualified candidates who are ready to launch a professional career as an international civil servant. The young professionals programme (YPP) is a recruitment initiative that brings new talent to the United Nations through an annual entrance examination. For young, high-calibre professionals across the globe, the examination is a platform for launching a career at the United Nations. This programme builds upon the national competitive recruitment examination (NCRE) which was held for the last time in 2010.

So for all of you who are asking for entry level jobs, this is the UN programme that is geared towards your needs. Please note though that this is a very competitive programme so prepare yourself well when applying to it!
