WFP now on the UN Job List

There have been a lot of small and big improvements on the UN Job List over the past days. The most significant improvements are that the World Bank, IFC, IMF, UNESCO and CTBTO job robots have been fixed so these organizations are back on the UN Job List.
But now, with a lot of the existing robots fixed it’s time add more organizations. So WFP is making the beginning. WFP jobs are now on the UN Job List, too.
Please note that WFP seems to be recruiting mainly against their profiles. So if there is no Duty Station listed on the UN Job List, the position may be a roster position that may be needed in different parts of the world. So please make sure to take this into considerations when you work on your search criteria.

There are still a few organizations on my list. But if you know of a UN organization which is not on the UN Job List yet, please let me know in the comments, below. Thanks!

PS: From a purely personal point of view the WFP homepage is very interesting. And if you need a last second gift, have a look there…

Twitter updates for @UNJobList are online again

As I mentioned before, with the change in Twitter’s API my previous version of the UN Job List Twitter feeder @unjoblist broke. The good news is that I found the time now to restore it after the move to the new server and now the Twitter feed is working well again. So if you are interested in a daily stream of new vacancies, follow @unjoblist (or alternatively, use the RSS feed of the New Jobs page).

Also, I repaired some robots which had issues over the past weeks and I am in the process of implementing a better way of extracting data from the UN Job List. So stay tuned some more changes are coming up soon.

Cheers,
Sebastian

UN System Internship Programmes

Lately, I have been asked about UN Internship Programmes a few times so I would like to share some information about these programmes. Please note that I’m not providing this information on behalf of the UN or any UN organization but merely as a private person. So the best advice I can give is to stick to the official resources.

Many UN organisations offer internships. You can check out the UN’s Internship Programme. Typically, for an internship you need to be “graduate [or] post-graduate student”. The official site is not listing specific subjects you need to study in order to be eligible but refers to “diverse academic backgrounds” so check the openings of the UN for details on who they are looking for. On the UN’s website are more links to Geneva, Vienna, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut, Santiago, Arusha, and The Hague based internships but the opportunities don’t stop there: Many organizations in the UN system offer internships, too.

Just to name a few UNDP, UNICEF, and UNOPS all have internships. So, if you would like to know which organizations exist in the UN system refer to the UN Organisational Chart and find the website of the organization you are interested in. Then, see if this organization offers internships (many do) and work your way down from there.

Aside from general internship programmes, some internships are also advertised similar to regular jobs. These opportunities are also picked up by the UN Job List, so it is a good idea to search the UN Job List for internships.

A few items to keep in mind

  • Know what you want: Don’t approach an organization only because you came across their website and saw an opening there. Make sure you know as much as possible about the organization. So read up on their goals, their activities, their approaches etc. as much as you can. Try to understand what expertise the organization may need and ask yourself if you fit these profiles.
  • Know what you apply to: In case you apply to an internship opportunity and even if you understand what the organization is about, make sure you understand the specific opening well. Read the opening several times and try to understand where in the organization the internship would be. Apply if you think you are a good fit.
  • Know how to apply: Read the advert carefully and make sure you fulfill all the formal criteria you need to fulfill for the opening. Also, make sure that your application speaks to why you specifically should get the internship. Explain your CV and your motivation and how you could contribute to both the specific internship opening and the overall organization’s needs. At the same time, keep it short and concise. The strength of your argument should not depend on the length of your cover letter.

Also keep in mind that

  • Internships are unpaid and that if you need a visa etc. the logistics and administration is often times up to you.
  • Internships vary in duration. Many organizations have internships from 2 months to 6 months. Check with the organization you are interested in and see what works for them. Sometimes you seem to be able to negotiate a timeframe.
  • Internships are a great way to get some inside into an organization. However, don’t expect to get a job in the UN through an internship. Many organizations have ‘black-out’ periods after an internship in which you are not eligible to apply for any job at the organization you just interned with.

All of this should give you a start in finding an internship with the UN. Expect the overall process to take a bit of time and don’t be discouraged if you don’t succeed immediately. Many internships are very high in demand and it is quite possible that you don’t hear back from the organization if you’re not selected.

Having said all this, interning at a UN organization is a great way to learn about the inner workings of the UN system and a great overall experience. Good luck internship hunting!

PS: Please don’t ask about specific job / internships in the comments: I don’t have any more information about opening than the information on the UN Job List. Thanks!

Update: Server Migration (almost) complete

I have written about my server migration last week and the good news that it is almost done. There are just a few minor things to be done in the background of the site but none of that should affect the site’s performance or availability.

On the e-mail side of things the situation is slightly different: The server sends quite a few e-mails every Saturday and the new server is not yet known to the big e-mail hosts which means that some e-mail hosts may still have issues delivering the UN Job List e-mail alert. To fix this situation, please add my e-mail address (sebastian[at]unjoblist.org) to your address book and/or enter it into the approved sender list if you have such a list. If you didn’t get the e-mail this week or if you encounter any other issue, please drop me a comment and I will take care of it.

Thanks a lot!

Upcoming Server Migration – Small service disruptions possible on Wednesday November 17th

Hello together,

I already posted about the broken Twitter-Update which happened ever since Twitter changed their API and unfortunately on top of that some other items in the backend of the UN Job List need to be fixed, too. To solve all that I setup a new server over the past and started to migrate my sites. Up to now, the Little Peacekeeper and this blog (Rottmair.de) have been moved. What is outstanding is the UN Job List and I want to move it this coming Wednesday November 17th.

Over the past weeks I worked on a migration plan and with the UN Job List being as big as it is right now this turned out to be bit more complicated than I expected. Anyways, I came up with a plan that should allow for migration of the UN Job List without any downtime of the site itself.

However, to be on the safe site and to ensure that nothing goes wrong I will temporarily disable the possibility of signing up for new UN Job List job alerts on Wednesday November 17th. You can sign-up to the UN Job List before and after Wednesday.

I’m sorry if any of this inconveniences you but would like to remind you that I’m doing this in my spare time with no financial interest whatsoever. I will make sure that I keep service disruptions as small as possible and I will report back once the migration is done.

Thanks for your understanding,
Sebastian

UN Jobs back on the UN Job List

Good news, today I managed to fix the UN jobs on the UN Job List. That i.e. I added the Inspira Career Portal to the UN Job List. However, the transition seems to still be in full swing and at present there are not that many jobs in Inspira.

So let’s keep an eye on the situation. If you find departments which are not on the UN Job List yet, please leave a comment and I will fix the these departments, too.

Thanks for your help!
Sebastian
