Server outage

This blog and the UN Job List unfortunately experienced a server outage the last two days (12th and 13th of January). What happened was that after a routine security update the server configuration got messed up and since I was travelling I did not have the time to properly look after it. Sorry for any inconvenience.

The UN Job List e-mail alert will be sent normally as of next week again.

Cheers,

Sebastian

Who is hiring in the UN System? The UN Job List.org 2007 statistics

The UN Job List provides currently available vacancies in the UN System in one easy to search database. For a quick overview over the current vacancies in the different organisations visit: http://unjoblist.org/lists/Organisation.

It has been a while since we reviewed the UN Job List vacancy statistics and now, in the beginning of 2008 it is time to look back at 2007 and see what organisation was the most active so far. So, looking at vacancies as collected by the UN Job List during the last few months (April 4th to January 5th 2008) the top 5 organisations are these:

  1. UNDP – United Nations Development Programme: 1532 vacancies
  2. WHO – World Health Organisation: 1154 vacancies
  3. UN DPKO – United Nations Department For Peace Keeping Operations: 879 vacancies
  4. UNOPS – United Nations Office for Project Services: 641 vacancies
  5. IFC – International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group): 291 vacancies

Also this time let’s have a look at the situation without open vacancies (you might recall that there are a lot of open DPKO vacancies which seem like they are not really getting filled):

  1. UNDP – United Nations Development Programme: 1532 vacancies
  2. WHO – World Health Organisation: 1154 vacancies
  3. UNOPS – United Nations Office for Project Services: 641 vacancies
  4. IFC – International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group): 291 vacancies
  5. UN DPKO – United Nations Department For Peace Keeping Operations: 218 vacancies

Also this time the usual disclaimer applies: The statistic includes organisations listed on the UN Job List. There are entities like WFP which are not included in the UN Job List statistics, since they recruit via rosters and do not have public vacancy announcements. Please keep in mind that the list is only considering externally open vacancies. The UN Job List does not know if and how many people have been hired on the vacancy announcements. For inquiries on individual openings, please contact the organisation directly.

How to get a job with the UN

With the UN Job List growing and growing I receive more questions of people who would like to join the UN and have no idea where to start. To be quite honest, my page is the worst place to start if you don’t know how to get a job with the UN.
Let me explain: On the UN Job List you find UN vacancies by Organisation or Duty Station and you can comfortably search for vacancies. However, if you don’t know how the UN works, I highly recommend that you familiarise yourself with the UN system and its agencies before you apply to any of the jobs listed here.
There are good resources out there that help you getting the process done (like here and here) but the essence is: Know the system! Know what goals the agencies try to achieve, where they are active and what you can do to help the organisations to get their job done in a better way. If you did this part of the work, then start using my site and then there is a real chance that you will find the job you have been hoping for.

Maintenance on UN Job List: UNFPA online again

Just a quick note on the UN Job List. I adjusted the UNFPA robot to the new e-recruitment system that UNFPA uses now. Also, I added UNIFEM vacancies to the list now (check in UNDP).

As an experiment I also added duty station specific pages. The following work already:

http://unjoblist.org/lists/DutyStation/NewYork/

http://unjoblist.org/lists/DutyStation/Geneva/

http://unjoblist.org/lists/DutyStation/Copenhagen/

http://unjoblist.org/lists/DutyStation/Vienna/

http://unjoblist.org/lists/DutyStation/Nairobi/

Let me know in the comments if this is helpful.

Cheers, Sebastian

First 100.000 hits on UN Job List

Today the UN Job List received its first 100.000 hits and although that is not too much if you compare it to the big pages on the web I still like the way things go 🙂

It is good to see that a lot of people find this page useful and I even heard of a first job that was found via the UN Job List. So, if you find your job via the UN Job List, please let me know via a comment below – thanks!

Who is hiring in the UN System? The top organisations on UN Job List.org

The UN Job List provides almost all currently available vacancies in the UN System in one easy to search database. For a quick overview over the current vacancies in the different organisations visit: http://unjoblist.org/lists/Organisation. The page provides an overview over all organisations listed and indicates how many vacancies are listed per organisation in total and how many were added in the last week. This provides a first clue for the question about who is hiring in the UN and who is not. However the list on this page is slightly misleading since not all organisations have their vacancies published for the same time. A good example would be the comparison between UNOPS which has publishes opportunities usually for two weeks in contrast to the UN secretariat which has typically posted their jobs for two months.

Now, who is hiring in the UN system? Well, looking at vacancies as collected by UN Job List during the last few months (April 4th to July 21st 2007) the top 5 organisations are these:

1. UN DPKO – United Nations Department For Peace Keeping Operations: 584 vacancies
2. UNDP – United Nations Development Programme: 527 vacancies
3. WHO – World Health Organisation: 519 vacancies
4. UNOPS – United Nations Office for Project Services: 192 vacancies
5. ICC – International Criminal Court: 107 vacancies

But to be fair a lot of the UN DPKO vacancies are open vacancies and seem like they have been around for a while. If you take to open DPKO vacancies out of the picture the top 5 organisations look like this:

1. UNDP – United Nations Development Programme: 527 vacancies
2. WHO – World Health Organisation: 519 vacancies
3. UNOPS – United Nations Office for Project Services: 192 vacancies
4. ICC – International Criminal Court: 107 vacancies
5. UN DPKO – United Nations Department For Peace Keeping Operations: 96 vacancies

As stated above, the statistic includes the organisations which are listed on UN Job List. Some organizations like WFP are not in the UN Job List statistics, since they recruit via a roster and do not have public vacancy announcements. Also, it is worthwhile keeping in mind that this list is about external vacancies only. For obvious reasons the UN Job List does not include internal vacancies and there is no way to determine form the outside if none, one, two or many persons have been hired for a vacancy.

Search Alert for Job listings – beta test open for everybody now

Just a quick note on the progress of the UN Job List e-mail alert: I opened the sign-up for the alert now for everybody. To sign-up you need to perform a search. Then, enter your e-mail address on the results page and you are signed-up for a weekly alert on United Nations vacancies that match your search criteria.

Update 12-Jun-07: I wrote more about the UN Job List e-mail alerts here.

E-mail alert for UN Vacancies – be one of the 20 first to sign-up

Update 24-May-07: The sign-up is closed for now – please stand by for the official launch of the newsletter in a few weeks – thanks

I’m in the process of implementing an e-mail alert for UN Job List wich would provide you with the latest job listings via e-mail. What I’m developing is a weekly alert which firstly lists new opportunities that match your search criteria and secondly contains a list of all vacancies that will close in the coming week.

Programming the alert was a bit more complex than I thought but I managed to get it done. To make sure that I can handle all the requests and to get some experiences with different e-mail servers and how they treat my alert I will open the alert to only a few people at this time.
This week, I will allow up to 20 people to sign-up for UN Job List e-mail alert. The weeks to follow I will gradually allow more and more subscriptions.
Be one of the first to benefit from the UN Job List e-mail alert by leaving me a comment below! I will contact you via e-mail in the order of the comments and provide you with the details on how to sign-up.

Have fun,
Sebastian
