    Hello Sebastian and friends,

I was wondering if anyone was willing to help with clarification on the six month rule after an internship. I’m an ex-intern who just finished interning at the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and I’m unsure about the extensiveness of this rule.

Does it apply only to the vacancies within your commission/agency? Does it apply only to the commissions/agencies within the Secretariat? Is it UN-wide?

I asked a few supervisors and they were also unsure. Safe to say it’s driving the interns crazy.

    Thanks for any clarification!

    Hi there,

I know this rule still exists in some places. Others have done away what with it since it is often more harmful than helpful.

The problem is, you will find people interpreting it to their liking and if you are unlucky it is interpreted strictly.

The way I know this rule is, that you can’t start in the team you are currently working. All other places should be fair game. If you find the policy text – could you post it? Thanks!

    Good luck!
