Hello Sebastian ,
My husband is 47 years old . He has been a General manager in 5 star hotels since 13 years . Does he have a chance to work for the UN ?It is very hard to say “yes, he has a chance” or “no he doesn’t”. As a matter of principle, if he fulfils the conditions of a posted vacancy he has a chance. His age should not be an issue.
Here are a few things you may want to consider:
– Which countries would you be willing to work in? Was the hotel in a developing country? Then maybe consider going for these kinds of postings?
– What skills does he bring from his pervious experience? How is that relevant to working in the UN? (I personally think that some of the skills you need to successfully run a hotel, apply to many of the challenges that the UN faces in missions / offices away from the capitals)
– Why does he want to work for the UN? What is the motivation? Think about that for a moment and explore possible good answers to highlight. With all of the above, apply accordingly and good luck!
ujuParticipantHello Sebastian,
I applied for a job at UNOPs and my application status says “long listed” and the vacancy status says “shortlisting”. Do i have a chance to be called for an interview?
Hi uju,
I think it doesn’t look brilliant, but there is still a possibility: while shortlisting is happening, people from the longlist will be selected. Now if the status just switched today, I think it doesn’t mean much. But if the status switched long time ago, it is more likely that the shortlist is compiled without you.
Good luck in any case!
AsjadkhanParticipantDear Sabastian,
What about me? I am rostered in 3 categories but in Field Services. My appointment as security officer in FS-4 was withdrawn from UNSMIL about three years ago. I am sending applications each time vacancy is announced but no response yet. I attempted general assessment test for CPO FS-4 & 5 but no result yet. Kindly guide what going on in UN?
Asjad Khan
Dear Asjad,
sorry I can’t help in this case: I’m not the UN, I don’t speak on behalf of the UN and I don’t really know the details of this case 🙁
I really hope it all will work out for you again. Good luck job hunting!
Cheers, Sebastian
AsjadkhanParticipantThank you so very much Sir. Lot of uncertainty prevails in respect of getting a job in UN these days. Every day status of applications that I have been sending as rostered candidate is changing from “under consideration” to “recruitment completed or filled from roster” but things are still the same for me. However, hopes are still high. Really appreciate you feedback which is encouraging. Thank you Sabastian.
My request here:
In regard to job application status – I would like to ask every poster here, please feel free to add dates (Vacancy level + UN System you are applying, Application submitted, Application status, Vacancy Status). I had been following this platform just to understand and learn what to expect. My question here:
Did anyone applied with UNOPS/UNEP/ITC in last 3 months, and would you like to share your experience.Hi there,
on UNOPS I may be able to share some experience (full disclosure: I didn’t apply myself) – but what are you looking for?
During last three months, I personally applied with UN System organizations as said earlier in my post (UNOPS/UNEP/ITC) and I wish to hear from other applicants in same situation, their take on the process/status.
I did that in late October and haven’t heard anything yet and the application status remained same (under consideration/Shortlisting).

Ah, I understand now. Well, from what I know this is not entirely unusual. In fact most processes take a little while. But maybe there are folks here who applied themselves?
simkasParticipantHello,
I applied for several jobs with UNOPS/UN/UNICEF within last 3 months. Surprisingly, I applied for one post only 2 weeks ago and today I received an invitation to online assessment.
Still waiting for updated on other applications which are under review since October.
Subas YadavParticipantHello,
I applied in WFP, Nepal country office for Program Policy Officer (Literacy Specialist) and passed all process, till final process (written assessment, interview and presentation), final interview was 27 Feb, 2018 but still no any information from WFP. I sent email to them 2 times but no any response from WFP. Are they in process? -
