    Nana Yaa

THIS IS A SCAM!!! DO NOT SEND ANY PAYMENT!!!

At no point in this process should anyone be asking you for money. Please do not send any payment. I am truly sorry to hear that you have been put in this situation, and the job that you are going for is not actually real.

Whatever you do, do not send any money. Who is this coming from? What organization are they claiming to be with?

    Hi Julien,

If there is one thing I have learned in applying for jobs with the UN and its agencies, it’s be prepared to wait. And wait. And wait some more.

I applied for a position with the IAEA in September of last year. I wrote a test in November, created content for them in December, interviewed with them in February, and only yesterday did I finally hear that I was not successful. It can be a long, and often frustrating process!

    Good luck!

    Pedro

Well in my case they didn’t even check the references (and I’m wondering if it was for the same job as you Bundymoth, so that might be a good sign for you! Was it multimedia related?).

When I went through the same thing with the FAO they actually did check my references, and then two months later I heard back from them to say that I didn’t get the job, but that I was going to be put on the roster. From what I understand it means that you performed well enough that you might not need to interview for another position at the same level for the next two years. So, hopefully worst case scenario for you is that you have been rostered and they are just waiting to get the final deal done with the chosen applicant, or hopefully they are just taking their time with some things and you’ll get some good news soon.

    Good luck to you bundymoth!

Exact same boat over here ataylor and bundymoth. Incredibly frustrating to go through the entire process and just be kept waiting for months on end. I’ve pretty much given up hope at this point as I have been through this before. That beings said, anything can happen! Best of luck to the both of you.

Bumping the question from ataylor, as I just got the email about the P4 UNICEF Communications Talent Group as well! No idea what to expect, other than 12 multiple choice questions.

    Good luck, ataylor!

    Hi Miss Mira,

Really sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately I don’t think it is that uncommon. I went through something very similar a couple of years ago and it was very disheartening. After asking for references I heard back two months later that I did not get the job. I am going through a similar situation right now actually, and based on the length of time that it is taking post-interview I do not expect to have good news.

It really is a difficult process, and it is particularly tough when one gets so far into the process. In my case I started thinking about moving to and living somewhere new, mentally preparing my family for the possibility, looking at apartments… Even though I hadn’t received an offer, it was hard not to get ahead of myself and get excited. That made the rejection notice so much more painful.

As for the lack of feedback, the same thing happened to me. I asked for some but they said they were not in a position to offer any. Oh well.

But, rejection offers great opportunities for learning – even if they didn’t provide feedback. One thing I learned is that you don’t need to have your current employer down as a reference initially so that saves some awkwardness there.

Keep your chin up, and best of luck on your next application! It might not seem important, but by getting as far as you did in what is an incredibly competitive process you showed that you have what they are looking for – maybe just not for this particular job.

    All the best,
    Pedro

    Hi Bundymoth,

It was an admin position with the FAO and indeed it was a let down to not get the position after they contacted my references. That being said, because it took so long after the fact to get word I assumed that I wouldn’t be getting it, so I wasn’t too shocked when I received news.

I’m currently going through the process again with another admin position at the IAEA, so hopefully will hear something back soon one way or another. Where have you applied to? Hopefully you will have a success story to share with us soon! Best of luck!

    Following up on Bundymoth’s question…

I went through the interview process with the FAO two years ago and they contacted my references a few days later. I am certain that the references checked out and that they gave me glowing reviews, yet two months later i received word that I didn’t get the job. That being said, I was put on the roster so I am guessing they approved of me overall.

I guess it depends on the organization, but in some cases even if references check out it might not be a guarantee of employment.

Thanks so much for sharing your success story! I have been through two assessments and had my panel interview in mid-February with the IAEA, so it is encouraging to hear that it took quite a while before you heard anything back (now I can stop refreshing my emails every few minutes so see if I have heard back!).

I’ll let you know if/when I hear anything. Hopefully I will also be sharing a success story.
